Chris proposed to Steph near Rollins Pass and the Continental Divide. Under the guise of celebrating her birthday weekend, Chris surprised Steph on April 18th, 2024 by whisking her and Kili (their 12 year old golden retriever) off to a secluded A-frame in the mountains, which included a winter wonderland (12” of snow the night of the proposal, which Chris claims he arranged) and a Japanese soaking tub. Chris sealed the deal with a delectable birthday dinner, that included “Marry Me Chicken."
The Scoggins and McCray families embraced the spirit of celebration over the holidays last December with an intimate family dinner at Del Frisco’s in Dallas, TX near where both Chris’ brother and Steph’s brother and family live. Thank you to Stephanie's mom and dad, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen and Sharon McCray, for treating us to a decadent feast full of laughter, tears, and memories. It was a special opportunity to be together for fellowship and to break bread. It was a treat to have The Havens, Bartlett and Thate families travel from KC, Houston and Phoenix to Dallas to support and celebrate us (that means you -Aunt Pene, Uncle Greg, Drew, Megan, Danielle, and Taylor, Jacob, Naomi, Aunt Jeri, and Uncle Jon) The most special highlight of the evening was Chris’ toast to both his brother, Patrick, and to the memory of his incredible parents: Judy and George Scoggins.
The day before the wedding, Steph had a surprise for Chris: an alpine traverse across Telluride's Via Ferrata. Suspended ~600 feet above the town of Telluride's valley floor, the couple was exposed with nothing but iron rungs and a harness between them and the canyon below. With sheer drops beneath their feet, hearts racing, and 1000 ft of elevation gain, Steph told Chris if we can survive this, then we can handle marriage!
Stephanie and Chris' nuptials were a very low key affair in Telluride, the Switzerland of America, in Colorado's majestic San Juan Mountains.
The couple first went four-wheeling up to the south-facing wall of Telluride's box canyon to take photos against the backdrop of Bridal Veil Falls and Powerhouse, the striking white building and iconic landmark perched atop the falls. The couples' six month old puppy, Samantha ("Sammy"), joined the romantic occasion as well. Sammy wore a white blossom regalia of honor and posed ceremoniously with her mom and dad, who sported a floral-applique crepe gown and classic tuxedo.
This rugged, alpine trailblazing was followed by a scenic escapade to the site for Steph and Chris' vows. In the hush of San Miguel Peak, Lake Hope and Trout Lake, the air was crisp and the wild grasses and flowers were damp from a misty rain. Steph swapped her sandles for cowgirl boots, and the couple strolled across the meadow, taking in the cathedral-spired backdrop of Lizard Head's jagged silhouette and Wilson Peak's silver crown. They even spotted a young deer in the meadow - its quiet presence perfectly timed.
Hope Lake and the wedding meadow are cradled beneath San Miguel mountain, a 13er named for the archangel of strength and clarity. This once-unnamed meadow, quietly nestled between the two lakes felt as if it had been waiting for a name - and a beginning. Steph and Chris proclaimed the area “Hope Meadow” on their San Miguel County Marriage License. This new name was not just to mark the place, but to honor the promise it held: that love, like the land, can be both wild and grounding.
Chris' vows were a masterclass in heart and humor - witty without a trace of cliche, tender without tipping into sentimentality. He had Steph laughing through tears. Stephanie's vows were a balance of devotion and delight, crafted with the kind of honesty that feels both rare and timeless.
To seal their vows and kickoff forever with a pop, the couple exchanged rings, shared a kiss, and let the champagne fly, christening their commitment with a champagne shower, sipping from the bottle and having a celebratory toast.
As one final stop for the afternoon of revelry, the Scoggins' lingered at the San Sophia Overlook as the sun dipped behind the San Juan peaks and cast a golden light across the Box Canyon. The Telluride Valley was glowing below and the alpine air was humming with laughter and love. Steph, Chris and Sammy boarded The Telluride Mountain Village Gondola and said their farewells to their adventure photographer and guide for the day. They glided back down into the box canyon toward their new beginning.
